This Brooklyn Estate family home has been designed to satisfy two very different criteria. First and foremost was to create a home that would not need to rely on artificial lighting and ventilation in order to be liveable. Secondly, there was an intent to spark a dialogue of contrasting components. Both of these objectives are achieved via a juxtaposition of materials and textures as well as carefully considered form-making.

To our delight, the second objective was the solution to the first. The ground floor of the home is constructed in an orientation that is perpendicular to the site and seeks to be rooted into the earth through its natural elements, exposed materiality and heavy base which even steps back to allow for some breathing room for the existing “Acacia sieberiana” (Paper-Bark Thorn). the high floor-to-ceiling design invites the cool air of the garden to flow through the open floor plan while allowing for a consistent presence of indirect light. The First floor, in harmonious opposition to the ground, has been orientated parallel to the site and speaks a more sophisticated language through its open facade, smooth plaster and white paint finish. The colouring, setback and materiality of the first floor facade curates an environment that is cooler in the summer months and a warmer in the cooler months.

Collectively, this conversation of contrasting components has resulted in a comfortable family home that is rooted to the earth while remaining contemporary, luxurious and timeless.
